Sukai Bojang: ‘Women are vulnerable to Violence because Government does not care’

Sukai Bojang

Sukai Bojang, a seasoned Civil Servant, Women’s rights defender, former Press Officer under Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara and former Editor of Gambia News Bulletin, has said that "women are vulnerable to sexual violence because the Government of the Gambia does not care about women."

She was speaking to this medium during an Interview on Thursday, August 8th 2024, at her office in Kotu.

Expressing her opinion on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence in the Gambia, Sukai said, “The sad thing is that this Government does not care about women. They look down on women and that is why we are not protected, and we are vulnerable to violence."

She said that women can contribute positively to the development of this country, but when they are violated, their future is messed up.
She said a woman who is raped gets disturbed throughout her life, and that woman will never be normal again.

"If the person is strong, she will become very aggressive. I have known a woman who was raped during Jammeh’s regime and she has turned violent. She got married later but she couldn’t love. She was violent and aggressive."

She added that maybe other survivors of rape are not violent but choose to suffer silently throughout their lives. She said Survivors of Rape are ashamed of breaking their silence and hiding the fact that they were raped because of what society will say about them.

“Some survivors of rape don’t even get married again because it is either they hate men or they are scared to get close to men," she said.

Mrs. Bojang states that society cares a lot about women getting married and having a family of their own. She said but if this is a woman who has been sexually violated, she is going to hate men for the rest of her life.

On the responsibility of Parents to tackle violence against women and girls, she said “As Parents, we should train our children, boys and girls to respect each other. There is a breakdown in parenting, and we need to do better."

She said in this day and time, most, if not all, Parents work. She said they don’t have time to train or talk to the children.

"If we cannot sit with our children and talk with them during the day, we can do so at night before they go to bed. If we leave them to do and act the way they want, they will make us cry in the future because they will continue doing things that will land them into trouble," she said.

She said if the Government implements all laws that protect women from Sexual Violence, a lot of young men will be in jail.

She said, “We have children who are on drugs and if our girls are getting violated sexually, we will be adding more problems to the society. We have laws but we are weak when it comes to implementation of these laws."
