YoMIL Training of Young Women in Media Literacy Underway in LRR
The Young Women’s Media Information Literacy Initiative
(YoMIL), a project under the Media Academy for Journalism and Communication
(MaJAC) started its first training of 30 Young Women in the Media and Advocacy
in the Lower River Region of the Gambia from 8th-10th
November 2024.
The training held at the Mansawally Lodge in Pakalinding
brought together Young Women Journalists, Public Health workers, Press Club
Members, advocates, and activists working to advance the rights of Women and
Girls in the Region.
During the Opening Remarks, Meita Touray Project Manager of
the YoMIL said they are in LRR to train young women in different areas and Media Information Literacy. She said the reason why they are bringing only
women is because they want to hear from them. She said sometimes young women working
in the media face challenges and some of them feel uneasy about expressing themselves.
She added that during the training they can interact amongst themselves and engage each other to get some feedback that they can also go with. She said that they would want them to contribute to the final output that they would use to produce a media guide at the end of the day. She said the output of the project is to come up with a Media Guide for young women in the Media which can be used by practicing journalists, Press club Members, and Communication officers. She said the guide will help you understand the media even if you do not go through a media institution. She said they will also organize a women’s conference around May 2025, where they will invite some of the participants to come and also be part of it.
Mariatou Ngum, a Communications Officer at the Ministry of
Trade and a seasoned Journalist said the participants’ role in the project was to
guide them to produce a Media Guide. She said the sessions will be very interactive
and urged them to open up, ask questions, and bring forth ideas that will help
them produce a guide. She said she is sure that the young women of LRR are
strong and they can bring forth ideas that can yield results.
The YoMIL Project is staged to empower young women through
Media and Information Literacy funded by BMZ. The objective is to build a free,
diverse, and independent Media Landscape in the Gambia.
