women farmers of Saruja

In Saruja, a vibrant community nestled in the Central River Region (CRR South), scores of women rice growers are highly optimistic for a bumper harvest this year. They made this disclosure to the P2-P2RS team on tour to beneficiary farming communities in regions.

These women rice farmers unreservedly extolled the Project Two to Strengthen Resilience to Food and Nutrition Insecurity in the Sahel (P2-P2RS) for putting the smile of joy and optimism on their faces as they anticipate to scoop from their farms.

The Saruja women farmers are among the many in the country who have been supported by the project with quality rice seeds and fertilizer earlier this year with the view to upscale their production capacities and resilience.

"We are so grateful for the support we have received from the P2-P2RS project. This year's season seems to be exceptional as we anxiously look forward to a bounteous harvest," said one of the farmers with a touch of excitement in her voice.

United and fervently determined in their purpose, these women rice growers encourage one another to embark on unprecedented rice cultivation in order to keep hunger and poverty at bay, highlighting the vitality of their resilience, strength, and sense of community.

However, these farmers are not without challenges. They echoed the need for more support in vital farming inputs to augment and diversify their production scope.

"With the right support, we can expand our farms and produce more," these farmers explained while emphasising that the dream of food self-sufficiency is within reach.

The women are ready to cultivate enough rice for both subsistence and commercial purposes, actualising the country's long-held aspiration of food self-sufficiency.

The Project 2 of the Programme to  Strengthen  Food  and  Nutrition  Insecurity  in  the hub  Sahel (P2-P2RS) is a USD17.75 million project co-funded with a USD16.5 million grant from the African Development Fund(ADF) and an in kind Government Counterpart Contribution of USD 1.250 Million.

The primary objective is to contribute to improving living conditions and food and nutrition security of the populations in the Sahel and West Africa.

It aims to sustainably increase productivity and agricultural, silvicultural and pastoral production; increase income from agricultural, silvicultural, pastoral and fisheries value chains; and build the adaptive capacity of populations through better control of climate risks and contribute to climate change mitigation.
